CUPW Edmonton
The Edmonton Local of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers

The Edmonton Local C.U.P.W. represents about 1800 members in 30 workplaces in and around Edmonton. Members originally from different unions, and many new members, have worked together in CUPW since 1989, through three negotiated collective agreements and two strikes.

Stewards and activists work in a great variety of circumstances, on all 3 shifts, in the Mail Processing Plant (EMPP), 15 Letter Carrier Offices, plus couriers, maintenance workers, wicket clerks including in 17 retail outlets and Affiliate Offices, and Rural & Suburban Mail Couriers in most Depots, Affiliate Offices and several Postmaster Offices (CPAA).

The Main Post Office downtown houses Main Wickets and Letter Carrier Depot 11 - Main Business & Residential Letter Carriers, Mail Service Couriers and sortation and Registration Clerks, on all 3 shifts. The west-end Parcel Plant, opened in 1989, now the EMPP, houses processing of letter mail and bulk mail (flats, parcels and A/O’s), Revenue Verification and MSC shuttle drivers.

Letter Carrier Depots include “super depots” 2, 9 & Delton. City Final sortation is done by Clerks on midnight shift in every Edmonton Depot. Mail Service Couriers shuttle mail between the Plant and Main, Depots, and the Airport, and pick-up and deliver mail. Motorized Mail Couriers service Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Fort Saskatchewan.

Maintenance workers (mechanics, electronics technicians and vehicle maintenance and re-lifing) work at the EMPP, Main and Automotive Services.

Recent expansion in Retail service includes full service Corporate outlets at the South Edmonton Post Office, West Edmonton Mall Kiosk, and St. Albert Main Post Office. Affiliate Offices stretch as far afield as Wainwright, St. Paul and Barrhead, and RR & SS Couriers as far as Lac La Biche, Onoway and Tofield (CPAA Offices).
