As your councillor, I will fight against privatization of our community infrastructures. When governments make public investment in infrastructure, they are making a commitment to the future.
53% of all infrastructure is the responsibility of municipalities.
In 2003, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities estimated the core infrastructure deficit had reached $60 billion and was growing at $2 million a year.
Because they have chosen to cut taxes, other levels of government are eager to download more responsibilities to local governments. As the needs of cities and communities continue to grow, municipalities cut their own services to residents or privatize public services and sell-off public institutions.
The federal Conservative government is trying to force all proposed infrastructure projects to become public-private partnerships or P3s. However, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities recently argued that “There is simply no conclusive evidence that municipal P3s consistently deliver better value, or better service, than traditional public projects.”
